NEW YORK, NY (March 12, 2018) – Jim Moroney, chairman, president, and CEO of A.H. Belo Inc., has been selected as the recipient of Borrell Associates’ 2018 Award of Merit for outstanding leadership and innovation in local media. The award was presented today in front of more than 300 media executives at Borrell’s 9th annual Local Online Advertising Conference at the Grand Hyatt in Manhattan.
“Jim is one of those outspoken, dynamic leaders who becomes a swashbuckler when everyone else is wringing their hands,” said Gordon Borrell, CEO of Borrell Associates. “He’s built a brilliant team in Dallas and continues to lead the way for any local media company that wants to thrive instead of just survive.”
Belo’s transition from a monolithic newspaper company into a media and marketing powerhouse leads the industry. In 2017, the company’s share of the $169 million addressable digital market in Dallas was 32% — nearly three times that of peer companies, according to Borrell’s benchmarking data. Belo also leads the way in the percentage of advertising and marketing services revenue it gets from its digital products. Its $54.4 million in digital revenue represented 38% of total revenue from advertising and marketing services.
“I am honored to accept this award on behalf of all of my colleagues at A. H. Belo. It is through their inspiration, innovation and hard work that we have been able to build the digital marketing solution organization for which we are being recognized. It is especially gratifying to receive it from Borrell Associates, who understands the challenges not only of the newspaper industry but of all media that are a part of the ongoing digital transformation.”
Moroney is the ninth executive to receive Borrell’s annual award. Other recipients have included executives from Entravision Communications, Nexstar Media Group, The McClatchy Co., CBS Local Media, The E.W. Scripps Co., GateHouse Media, Fisher Communications, and Deseret Media. Borrell issues the award annually to an executive who’s taken an innovative path to help a local media company and the industry in its digital transformation.
Mr. Moroney has been chairman, president and CEO of A.H. Belo Corporation since 2013 and publisher and CEO of The Dallas Morning News from 2001 until March of this year. His extensive career in the media business includes stints as president and general manager of KOTV in Tulsa, president of Belo’s TV group, executive vice president of Belo, and president of Belo Interactive Inc. He serves on the boards of The Associated Press, the News Media Alliance, The Dallas Foundation, the State Fair of Texas, the Advisory Board of the College of Communications at the University of Texas and the Bishop’s Finance Council of the Diocese of Dallas.
He was named Publisher of the Year in 2004 by Editor & Publisher and he served as Chairman of the Newspaper Association of America. In 2012, he received the Frank W. Mayborn Award from The Texas Daily Newspaper Association for Community Leadership and two years later received the Frank W. Mayborn Leadership Award from the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association.
